Why Is My Dryer Taking So Long? 6 Common Causes

January 25, 2026 • 4 min read

Running your dryer for two or three cycles just to get clothes dry? Not only is this frustrating, but it's also wasting energy and money. Here are the six most common reasons your dryer is taking too long—and what you can do about it.

1. Clogged Lint Filter

The Problem: This is the most common and easiest-to-fix cause. A clogged lint filter restricts airflow, making your dryer work harder and take longer.

What to Do: Clean the lint filter before every load. If there's buildup from dryer sheets, wash the filter with soap and water monthly and let it dry completely before reinstalling.

2. Blocked Dryer Vent

The Problem: Even if you clean your lint filter regularly, lint accumulates in the dryer vent over time. A blocked vent prevents hot, moist air from escaping—and is a serious fire hazard.

What to Do: Disconnect the vent from the back of the dryer and check for blockages. You should also check the exterior vent hood. Professional dryer vent cleaning is recommended annually.

⚠️ Fire Safety Warning

Clogged dryer vents cause over 2,900 house fires each year. If your dryer is taking too long and the outside of the unit feels very hot, stop using it until the vent is inspected and cleaned.

3. Heating Element Issues

The Problem: If the heating element is failing or has burned out, your dryer will tumble but produce little or no heat.

What to Do: Run the dryer for a few minutes and check if it's producing heat. If the air isn't hot, the heating element (electric dryers) or gas igniter (gas dryers) may need replacement.

4. Faulty Thermostat or Thermal Fuse

The Problem: The thermostat regulates temperature, and the thermal fuse is a safety device that shuts off heat if the dryer overheats. If either fails, your dryer won't heat properly.

What to Do: These components require testing with a multimeter and should be replaced by a professional if faulty.

5. Overloading the Dryer

The Problem: Stuffing too many clothes in the dryer prevents proper tumbling and airflow. Clothes can't dry efficiently when they're packed in too tightly.

What to Do: Fill the dryer only about 2/3 full. Heavy items like towels and jeans should be dried in smaller loads.

6. Worn or Damaged Drum Seals

The Problem: The felt seals around the drum prevent hot air from escaping. When they wear out, heat escapes and drying efficiency drops.

What to Do: If you notice scorch marks on clothes or the dryer seems to be losing heat, have a technician inspect the drum seals.

Quick Diagnostic Checklist

  • Feel if the dryer is producing heat ✓
  • Make sure you're not overloading ✓
  • Check if clothes are still soaking wet from the washer ✓
